The National Weather Service in Caribou, Maine says cryoseisms have been reported in the area. These quakes are caused by sudden cracks in frozen soil or underground water during extreme cold. 
The sudden, deep freeze of soil can produce a phenomenon known as cryoseisms, or what are often called frost quakes, but according to experts, there is no need to worry about these events.
